Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) is a non-profit organisation based on the island of Koh Lanta. Its objective is to relieve the suffering and pain of the island's animals through sterilisation and care.
Since its foundation in 2005, LAW has sterilised, vaccinated and treated over 6,000 animals, with an estimated 80% of the island's dogs now sterilised. This has led to a dramatic reduction in the number of reproducing strays roaming the island and rabies has been all but eliminated.
LAW currently cares for over 60 dogs and cats at its animal centre, relying solely on donations to fund its work. The founder Junie Kovacs is also the owner of Time for Lime (see link below), a restaurant, bar and cooking school whose profits provide the main source of funding. The organisation is dependent on volunteers and welcomes people from all corners of the world to care for its animals. Some come for a few months, some are tourists passing through who help by taking a dog for a walk or spend time cuddling the cats. Visitors are provided with an informative guided tour and this is currently Tripadvisor's No.1 attraction on Koh Lanta.
All of the dogs in LAW's care are sterilised and vaccinated and a successful overseas adoption programme has resulted in a significant number of island dogs finding loving homes in Europe and North America. All of LAW's dogs have been pre-approved for international travel, meaning no quarantine required either in Thailand or their new country! The process is straightforward and a lot easier than people realise, with all requirements taken care of by LAW. All the adopter has to do is turn up at the airport to welcome their new family member!
We need volunteers
Our General Volunteers need a willingness to commit to hard work and a passion to help the cats and dogs of Koh Lanta, Thailand. A love of animals is obviously essential but it is not enough! We need people who are mature, regardless of age (some 20 year olds can be more mature than those in their 30s, it's all about your attitude!) Working at LAW is a rewarding and fulfilling experience but sadly we have been let down by far too many people who think they are here to party, with a bit of dog walking on the side. This is not a holiday experience, it is hard work and while you will meet plenty of people and we expect you to have lots of fun, our animals need to come first. If you are the kind of person who is lazy by nature or who wants to party all night and will be unable to work your 7.00am shift the next day, please do not even consider applying.
The minimum period we can accept volunteers for is one month but those who can stay even longer will be particularly welcome! You will not have to pay any extra money to stay longer.
Our volunteer and vet information packs, available for download from our website, provide very detailed information. If you have questions, please check first that they are not already answered in these information packs before emailing us; we deal with a lot of emails every day, often answering questions already answered in the packet! If you are interested in joining us, please use the links on our website to download the relevant application form.
We need loving homes for our animals
One of the biggest ways you can help us is by adopting one of our dogs and cats and giving them a loving home. The process is simple and involves no quarantine in your country.
We need sponsors for our animals
If you are unable to adopt one of our beautiful animals, the next best thing is sponsorship! Simply use the Paypal menu on our website to select your currency and the amount you wish to donate on a monthly basis. All donations will be used to provide food and medical care for the sponsored dog or cat and sponsors will receive regular updates with photographs of their animal.
Sterilization is so important!
Volunteering is giving and receiving love.
